The challenge
OR anterooms and pre-op bays cycled patients every 45 minutes. Between cases, staff relied on HVAC turnover and manual surface wipe-down; no active air disinfection ran during occupied hours.
The solution
SafeAirUV™ 2×2 troffers replaced anteroom and prep-bay lighting; 2×4 troffers were installed in recovery. All installation happened on Fridays after last case, with fixtures live by Monday first case.
Outcomes
- Sustained 5.8 air changes per hour in anterooms and pre-op bays during occupied use.
- Zero cases postponed, canceled, or moved during the entire retrofit.
- Reduced anteroom turnover buffer from 15 minutes to 8 minutes, adding schedule capacity.
- Infection preventionist reported no facility-linked SSIs in the 9 months post-install.
“Retrofit into the existing grid over one weekend. Sterile workflow never paused. That's the only pitch that would have gotten this approved.”
